Unexpected behaviour at the dinner table

Created by Mark 4 months ago

At one of our bustling Boxing Day dinners, amidst the clatter of dishes and the clink of glasses, Andrew and I found ourselves engrossed in a peculiar topic. We were having an animated discussion about a relative’s unique talent for inserting long-handled spoons deep into their nose. Despite repeated cautions that it wasn't appropriate dinnertime conversation, with so much cutlery on the table, the topic just kept coming back.

As we continued, so did the disapproval of Auntie Elisabeth. Realising we had pushed the boundaries of etiquette to the limit, Andrew and I offered a sincere apology to all present. Andrew, however, had one more trick up his sleeve.

With a mischievous glint in his eye, he theatrically lifted his napkin to his face, miming a sneeze. The room fell silent for a split second, only to erupt in laughter as a set of teaspoons shot across the table from beneath the napkin. The spectacle was so unexpected and absurd that even the sternest faces cracked a smile.

It was at this moment that Auntie Elisabeth, trying to maintain some semblance of decorum, stepped in. With a mix of amusement and exasperation, she firmly instructed Andrew and me, both well into our 40s, to leave the dinner table. As we rose, the laughter continued - a testament to Andrew's ability to bring moments of hilarity to family occasions.

I will miss him very much.
